Justice Labelle has lost too much in this war of monster and men, and it needs to stop now.
After her run in with Erin, which left her lying in a hospital bed, black and bloody blue, Justice is no longer going to sit by and simply accept the twisted hand, that has been dealt.
Especially since she now has superhuman powers, all thanks to her being a Doll.
Her one and only passion– To get through College and practice law at a top tier firm, is fading from her grasp and its all because of Calvin, Dante, Vampyres and the Government. In fact the government has more secrets than kids have candy… And they’re all just as deadly as the enemies they hunt.
But you know what? Justice has come up with her own master plan and heaven help the Vampyre, monster or human that gets in her way!
When Calvin and Jessica stopped by, my family left us alone. By the way Calvin was looking at me, it seemed like it was hurting him to see me like this. All I could say was, “I'm okay, I swear. ”
Not saying a word, he stood at the end of my bed, holding a small bear. His jaw clenched and his fingers were wrapped tightly around the stuffed animal, squeezing it until Jessica placed a hand on his shoulders.
“She's alive,” Jessica tried to reassure..
“Barely,” Calvin said through his teeth.
“Can I have my gift? ” I asked, sitting on the edge of my bed.
“Gift?” My ex questioned, confused. Then, remembering the stuffed animal in his grasp, Calvin walked over and hugged me lightly. He was afraid that his embrace would hurt me. He then handed over the bear stiffly.
Walking over as well, Jessica said, “You look lovely.”
“What happened to Erin?" I questioned the two agents.
Glancing at Calvin, who was now gazing out of the window, then back to me, Jessica answered, “Dead,”
Dead, the word echoed. “How?”
“Dante took care of her.”
“How?” I questioned again.
With a snap of his head, Calvin was now looking at me again, “That's none of your concern. All that you should be concerned with is that everything is over with.”
I didn't like that answer. Shaking my head, I said, “But, wha—”
“But nothing. ” His dark brown eyes stared at me, daring me to say something else, and when my lips parted to speak, my ex continued, “Justice you're alive. Take it as damn blessing and move on.”
“Move on to what? Because the last time I checked, I'm still a Vampyre Doll, and Mathias is still on the prowl. ” My head began to hurt. “I don't know where you want me to move on to, because as far as I'm concerned this shit is not over. ”
Brows pulling together, Calvin sighed with frustration. “I'll handle it."
“Will you?”
“I'll do everything in my power Justice. Please, believe me.”
Jessica, sitting on the end of my bed, said, “Are you up to seeing these?” She flashed me newspaper clippings.
“It depends,” I murmured, fixing myself in the bed.
Jessica tossed the newspaper toward me, landing on my lap. Picking it up, I read the headline. Lost girl found Dead! Was the common heading in most of the clippings that she had collected, and they showed Erin's corpse. From the neck down, she was covered, and I was in the newspaper for being brutally assaulted, with the culprit still on the loose.
Wait, culprit still on the loose?
I raised my eyes. “What does this mean?”
“It means,” Calvin jumped in, “that going forward from here, you're going to tell everyone that you were attacked. Attempted sexual assault.”
That was why my parents seemed uneasy, especially my dad. I looked down at the clippings again, knowing that I couldn't argue the story.
What was I going to say?
I was surprised with the influences that Cerberus had to create such a lie, to be able to control the media in this way. How many other stories had they twisted and manipulated to hide the truth?
Then I remembered my birthday party. I remembered that homeless guy screeching and breaking every piece of glass and window in his proximity. I remembered the next morning when the news anchor guy said that it had something to do with the Toronto power generators.
Do they do this often? Manipulate stories to their heart’s content? How many other stories I had heard in the last few years, that Cerberus had covered up? My mind careened thinking about that impossible answer.
Justice Labelle always had her life perfectly planned.
Her goals were to graduate from University and get into law school.
Then one day, Justice tried to kill herself.
Well, not her technically. It may have been her body, but those actions weren’t intentional and the suicidal thoughts were not hers. Or, so she keeps telling her therapist and family. Justice is afraid she’s losing her mind and just wants to forget everything. But when her best friend is murdered, another one is being mind-screwed by a Vampyre, and her ex is back in town, looking as scrumptious as ever and very suspicious, maybe she isn’t all that crazy!
