How To Find Great New Books

How to Find Great New Books

Hundreds of thousands of books are published every year. For an avid reader, the number of selections available is both a good thing and a bad thing. Good because the number of choices help a reader find something he might like; bad because the various options make it difficult for an individual to find something that appeals to his interests.
If you’re taking online college classes, you often are forced to read information you may not be interested in, making finding a book to read for pleasure all the more important. From digging through bargain bins to reading reviews, some ways make finding a book easy.

Try it

Tablet computers make it possible for users to purchase digital copies of books. Amazon and Apple’s digital bookstores make selecting a book easier. Each store allows users a sample of a book before buying it. Reading a chapter or two gives you some insight as to the type of book you’re about to purchase. If you don’t like the small excerpt, you don’t end up wasting your money.
Okay, may be you don’t own a tablet or fancy e-reader. You can always venture to your local library or bookstore and randomly pick books off the shelves and read the summaries. Reading summaries can be time consuming, but if the quick paraphrasing of the book captures your attention, read a few chapters to see if you do enjoy the story. Picking books at random is a crapshoot, but the process does help you find a prized gem every now and again.

Read the Reviews

Reviews can be biased, but these small tidbits of information can make the selection process much easier. Read reviews objectively. Scan through the reviews and then visit a local library or bookstore to read a few chapters. Use reviews as a guide. A guide to point you to books that are garnering attention and then reading them for yourself to see if you agree with the reviewer.
Since some reviews are paid by the publisher, some writers tend to lend favoritism. Other times, the reviews come in from the actual readers, making the information more objective. Apple and Amazon’s bookstores allow for user-oriented reviews, offering a more reliable source of information.

Scan through Blogs

Bloggers offer a user-oriented review. While blogs can post several fun books for individuals to read, most are selected due to the blogger’s personal interests. If you and the blogger share interests, great, you can trust his opinions. If you tend to be a bit weary of someone else’s opinion, you might be wise to pick up the book yourself and read a few chapters before committing to a purchase.
Blogs, reviews and even reading the book can make great methods for finding a hidden gem. Sure, recommendations from friends also work, but you and a buddy may have different interests. Try objective reviews, but try to remain objective when selecting a book by just reading the reviews. Test a book out to see if the reviews are honest.
If literature and writing interest you, you might have a future as a book reviewer. For more information on literature course, writing or colleges, visit accredited-online-colleges.org.

Author Interview w/ Nely Cab

Today we have author Nely Cab on our blog, I was lucky enough for Nely to answer some of my questions. So, enjoy the interview....

Nely Cab author of Creatura

What or who inspired you to become a writer?

I honestly just wanted to write stories. But looking back, I found inspiration in Judy Blume’s “Are you there God? It’s me Margaret.” I loved (love) that book!

What was the hardest part about writing your book?

The hardest part was coming up with the plot and the dialogue for each character.

What was your favourite chapter to write and why?
Chapter 9 because it’s told from David’s point of view. I think that’s where the reader truly understands what David is feeling for Isis.

Do you ever experience writers block?

Yes, I do. I try to overcome it by reading a book, listening to music and not placing so much emphasis on the fact that I’m not able to write then. I find that when the words are ready, they will come.

What is the last book you read?

I actually read a manuscript of “Destiny Awaits” by Jaidis Shaw, due for release early this summer. Currently, I’m reading “Pandora’s Box” by Gracen Miller.

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional. with whom would it be?

I would trade places with Albert Einstein (before the A-Bomb) because I’ve always wanted to know what a genius thinks about on their ‘down” time, or is their mind always working? And to simply to have all that knowledge in your head in one fraction of a second would be amazing.

What do you like to do when your not writing?

I like to catch up on episodes of “The Vampire Diaries”, draw, craft, shop and sleep.

Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?

It’s all imagination and some of it – David – was taken from my dreams.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Rainbow Bright, a teacher, a scientist, an artist and a writer. I couldn’t make up my mind.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your readers and fans?

I’d like to than them for their support and their interest in the “Creatura” Series, and I hope that they will be patient with me as I write “Vivus” for them.

What’s your favorite sinful dessert?

Chocolate Molten Cake with Ice Cream, whipped cream and fresh fruit.

Favorite part of the day?

Coffee breaks time!

Dogs or Cats?

Neither. I’m allergic.

Favourite Colour?

Black

George Clooney, Brad Pitt or Aussie hunk Hugh Jackman?

Hugh all the way!

Favourite Disney movie?

I have several: All the princess movies and Pirates of the Caribbean. Johnny Depp is my favorite actor!

                                        ******

Thanks so much to Nely Cab for answering my questions, it's been wonderful having you on our blog.

I haven't had the pleasure to read Nely's book as of yet, but with close to "90" 5 star reviews it's most definitely on my next to buy.

Here's some info about Creatura, with everything we've heard this is A MUST READ so, like us we recommend adding this to your own TBR piles also.

Goodreads Description:

When seventeen year-old Isis Martin is having trouble sleeping due to perturbing dreams of a horrific growling beast, she decidesto confront her fear. But what Isis discovers is something other than a menacing entity. The human-like creature offers Isis assurance that he is not a figmentof her imagination. Unwilling to accept his avowal, Isis sets his wordsto contest by asking the entity to prove himself - a dare, he readily welcomes. It is in her dreams that Isis innocently stumbles upon the silent existence of the divine lineage of those that man has long forgotten. In a quaint town, deep in south Texas, this story leads Isis onto the path of impermissible love and captivating life-changing truths. Review- Balthazar by Claudia Gray

Title- Balthazar
Author- Claudia Gray
Genre- YA Paranormal
Publisher- HarperTeen
Release Date- 6th of March 2012

Blurb- For hundreds of years, the vampire Balthazar has been alone—without allies, without love.

When Balthazar agrees to help Skye Tierney, a human girl who once attended Evernight Academy, he has no idea how dangerous it will be. Skye’s newfound psychic powers have caught the attention of Redgrave, the cruel, seductive master vampire responsible for murdering Balthazar and his family four centuries ago. Now Redgrave plans to use Skye’s powers for his own evil purposes.

Balthazar will do whatever it takes to stop Redgrave and exact his long-awaited revenge against his killer. As Skye and Balthazar stand together to fight him, they grow closer—first unwillingly, then undeniably. Balthazar realizes his lonely world could finally be changed by her. . . .

In a story filled with forbidden love and dark suspense, one of the most beloved characters in Claudia Gray’s New York Times bestselling Evernight series will captivate readers with his battle to overcome his past and follow his heart.

Review- Yay! Finally we get the story to my favourite character from the Evernight series. And can I just add, this book was SO much better than the Evernight books. I found myself only reading the sequels to Evernight because I felt obliged after reading the first one. Balthazar however, I would gladly read any sequels.

So my first recommendation is that you read the Evernight series before you read this one (if you haven't already) otherwise you probably won't understand a lot of the background chit chat in it. Now to the book. I really genuinely loved Balthazar. It was full of intense action and drama, not to mention the adorable love story. And if you are like me and felt sorry for Balthazar in the Evernight series, with no love happening for him, well this one is full of it. And I loved it!

Balthazar really is a book for the Balthazar character lovers. It delves into his past to explain who he is and why he is the way he is. We get introduced to his sire and are shown the true secrets into his relationship with his loony vampire sister Charity. And speaking of relationships, Balthazar and Skye Tierney (the girl who saved Bianca in Afterlife) are one hormonal little duo! Things for Skye have not been normal after leaving Evernight Academy. The psychic powers that were thrust into her has made her one desirable little asset to a vampire clan. Balthazar, sent to protect her has found himself battling the war between keeping the relationship professional. Skye who has always had a secret little crush on him doesn't exactly make it easy either.

So between protecting Skye from vampires who want to enslave her for her gifts and falling for her Balthazar has his work cut out for himLink. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Balthazar. It really is a book worth reading.

Here's a small Teaser, enjoy!

Callie Daniels was home.

Her heart fluttered as she stepped on the porch of the achingly familiar ranch house. Each lonely night as she finished college, she'd longed for this ranch, the sounds, the smells, the feel of the earth under her feet. Yet her longing didn't stop there. She longed for the man inside the house. The man she'd fallen in love with as a tiny girl, shadowing his every move. She'd finally come home to him.
Now her real life could begin. Inhaling, she smelled the sweet Texas grass as excitement filled her. Yet she hesitated. Would he have changed? She hadn't seen him in months. They hadn't spent last Christmas together, he'd forgotten her birthday, and most puzzling, he hadn't attended her graduation. Not knowing what to think, Callie gave him the benefit of the doubt. Ranching always came first, but he'd been missed.
Admiring the improvements made to his house made her smile. They'd decided that keeping one house open was more economical. It looked grand with its new coat of white paint, and new green shutters. The door was still red. His mother had insisted a red door brought good luck. Anticipation filled her as she opened the door and walked in. It always seemed such a cheery house, with lots of windows to invite in the bright Texas sun. A sense of peace came over her as she walked down the hall, until she walked into the living room. Speechless, she froze at the door.
He sat on the couch with a black haired beauty in his arms. They didn't notice her as they kissed, his hands moving through her hair. Callie watched the woman unbutton his shirt. She gasped, they looked at her and jumped up off the couch.
The dark haired woman seemed confused but Garrett O'Neill's expression changed from surprise to guilt. He quickly buttoned up his western shirt and tried to give her a smile. ''I didn't know you were coming home.''

So I bet you are also wondering what our part of the stop involves?
Seeing as I had the honor of reviewing Pieces of Us in Februrary I got to interview Owen!
(If you missed my review, you can find it in this POST)

Here is our conversation.

Q1- So Owen, I really admire your determination and selflessness when it came to helping Charlotte let go of her past. You must really love her?

Owen: Thanks for having me here, Renee and Stacey. I do love Charlotte. I loved her from the first time I saw her and I just knew that I was going to marry that girl. I couldn't tell you exactly what it is about her, except that when I'm around her, I feel like myself. Charlotte makes me a better man and I hope I make her a better woman... I think I do.

Q2- How important was it for you that she let go?

Owen: It was vital for me that she let go of Cameron. When I proposed, I saw the fear that flashed in her eyes for a second before she said yes. I needed to know what that fear was about and when I found out about her previous marriage and how it ended, well, I knew she had to put that past behind her before we could move forward. I didn't want to wake up in ten years and find that she wasn't really in love with me, or have her walk out on me because of issues she carried around from a previous relationship. I wanted our lives to be a fresh start together.

Q3- You became quite good friends with Charlotte's father. Did it help that you both work in the police force?

Owen: Michael is great. I will admit that he frightened me a little at first. He came across as very protective but after I found out the way Cameron had treated Charlotte, I could completely understand his defensiveness and we understood each other. It took me a while to convince him that I was a good guy, but I think being a cop did help. He respected me for the work I did because he did it too.

Q4- What made you become a police officer?

Owen: My dad was a police officer too and was killed when I was a young boy. I don't know why but ever since then I was determined to be a cop too. My Mom wasn't too crazy about the idea but I felt like I needed to protect other kids from losing their dads like I did. I don't regret the decision - I love my job!

Q5- Dinner with Cameron's parents must have been tough on you?

Owen: You have no idea! That night was one of the most difficult things I've ever done in my whole life. But, Charlotte is the most important thing in my life and seeing her happy is all I want, so I went along for her. I don't think anyone was expecting Cameron to show up and he's lucky that his Mom pulled him aside because I was just about to lose my cool with him. Especially after he called Charlotte his wife.

Q6- What's your opinion on Cameron?

Owen: Look, I don't have anything against the guy. If I had have met him under different circumstances, I may have even liked him but the fact is, he's my fiance's ex-husband. I don't like what he did to Charlotte in the past but if he hadn't cheated, she never would have left him so it all worked out pretty well for me in the end. My hope was that Charlotte and Cameron would talk, sort out their previous issues and allow Charlotte to move on in her new life with me. I was NOT expecting them to spark up a friendship and have him become a part of our lives.

Well thankyou for answering my questions and I wish you all the best.

Owen: Thanks for having me ladies. It was nice to get a chance to voice my opinions on the situation because Charlotte's view is the only one explained in the book.

So now I suppose I have to give you something right?
I'm guessing you need some sort of letter?

Here it is!

We would like to thank Hannah for choosing us to join in on this Blog Hop and would like to congratulate her on the success of Pieces of Us!

Here is the link to your next stop and if you missed the others they are below also.

Happy Hopping!

How To Start A Book Club!

How to Start a Book Club

So you and your friends are all into the same types of books or you’re just looking for an excuse to get together and chat over dessert. Starting up a book club can be a great way to meet both of these needs. Book clubs are fairly easy to start, as long as you keep a few things in mind:
  • Create a Vision – The first place to start is what you want to get out of the club. If you and a friend or two are trying to get the club going, you can discuss this together. Are you interested in plowing through the classes or hitting up the latest fantasy novel? Do you want discussions to circle around art and critical theory or would you prefer a more laid-back vibe?
  • Meeting Place – The meeting place you pick for your group will depend on both the vision of the club and the resources available to you. If you think a few members of the club will be willing to open their homes to meetings, then this can be a good approach. Otherwise, local libraries, YMCAs and colleges also have public space or space available to rent. Parks and restaurants are other possible meeting places.
  • Logistics – The club will need a leader, although you don’t want to have one person taking on all the responsibilities. You will need people to lead discussions, keep track of the book choices and discussion questions and bring snacks to meetings. Many of these logistical details can be sorted out at the first meeting.
  • Choosing Books – To get started, have all the members of your club bring two book nominations to the first meeting. There are a few ways to choose the book you’ll read from these nominations. You can put it to a vote or pull the names out of a hat. You can also utilize the premade book club kits available for check out at many libraries.
  • Develop Discussion Questions – Many publishers, including HarperCollins, Random House, and Penguin have discussion questions for popular books available online. You can also use a general set of questions as well.

Book Review: Forgiven by Jana Oliver

Title: Forgiven (The Demon Trappers #3)
Author: Jana Oliver
Release date: 27th March 2012
Published by: St. Martin's Griffin
Genre: YA

Goodreads Description:

The days are growing darker for 17-year-old demon trapper Riley Blackthorne. With her father’s reanimated body back safely, Beck barely speaking to her because of a certain hunky Fallen angel, and a freshly-made deal with Lucifer, she has enough on her hands to last a normal teenage lifetime. Though she bargained with Heaven to save his life, her ex-boyfriend Simon has told the Vatican’s Demon Hunters that she’s working with Hell. So now she’s in hiding, at the top of everyone’s most-wanted list.

But it’s becoming clear that this is bigger than Riley, and rapidly getting out of control: something sinister is happening in Atlanta… or someone. The demons are working together for the first time ever and refusing to die, putting civilians in harm’s way. Riley thinks she might know who’s behind it all, but who’s going to believe her? Caught between her bargain with Heaven and her promise to Lucifer, Riley fears the final war is coming – and it may be closer than anyone thinks…

My Rating: A MUST READ!!

My Review: Wow! This is the third book in the demon trappers series and they just keep getting better and better.

Jana Oliver has done it again! What an amazing continuation to this story. I was captivated from the very first few pages, absolutely loved being thrown back into the Trapper's world with even more fast paced action, danger, heartache, loads of evil demons, simply an adventure that's not to be missed.

As you can tell from a previous post of ours, Riley Blackthorne is my favourite kick-ass character. And in this book she doesn't disappoint, even when the world feels like it's all on her shoulders, she still manages to keep her head held high and kick some serious Demon ass!

Beck, oh Beck, still kicking butt and protecting Riley, maybe a little too much...what are you doing?!?! (Better read to find out *winks*).
The relationship between Riley and Beck seems to become more of a pain, lol. They keep butting heads and sometimes I was telling them just to kiss and get it over with. I feel in this book they both seem to grow alot more as individuals and feelings they've been hiding start to peek through.

With a fantastic storyline that'll have you devouring each book, stuck on the edge of your seat... If you haven't read this series yet than I recommend you go pick up a copy now, starting with book one Forsaken.

I look forward to the last book in this series Foretold which is due for release 2nd August 2012, not too long to wait, yay!!!
