**NERD BOOK BLAST** Desolation by Travis Simmons

Desolation
by Travis Simmons

Asher St Paul thought it was just a typical zombie apocalypse like in the movies, until the necromancers crawled out of the woodwork. Since the undead have chased the living into hiding, the necromancers are able to roam freely in a new America of their making. Asher is seeking safe harbor. The need for safety is what drove him from his home in Philadelphia Pennsylvania before it was shelled. He has searched from quarantine to quarantine, always finding them overrun with zombies until he hears of The Refuge, a military compound in Binghamton New York.

With his family and lover lain to rest by his own hand, he has nothing left to lose and gives everything he has to reach the safe haven. But questions arise when he reaches The Refuge, mainly, how has he been able to sustain multiple zombie bites and not change? He thinks he has found safety in the military compound turned quarantine, but he was wrong. Even now there is a necromancer trying to make The Refuge their kingdom of the dead.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I have always been a do-it-yourselfer. I haven’t had any formal education on writing, and I haven’t been raised around writer types. For that matter, I wasn’t even encouraged to read when I was a kid, even though plenty of people in my family read. When I was a teenager, I discovered Cliff’s Notes on Mythology, and it sparked something in me. It was like a floodgate had been opened, and all of these stories started rushing in. I would get ideas at random times, and I would jot them down. I have a pretty big file system of everything I have ever written. Someday I will get to them and put them all into electronic files. There is some good material in there, but there are a lot of bad stories too.
I started writing when I was thirteen or fourteen. At an early age I was already writing books of Saracin (the world The Bonds of Blood takes place in). The first book I wrote of that place was “The Calling of the Two” (not yet released). While I was writing that, I kept thinking of these characters Jovian and Angelica. I knew they had a part to play in the storyline, but they weren’t going to be in the same series. For that matter, they weren’t even going to be in the same age. As I finished the first draft of “The Calling of the Two” I went on to write the first book of Angelica and Jovian’s story. At that time it was The Mirror of the Moon. Later an editor told me it was so massive that I should make the one volume into two, and so The Bonds of Blood was born, and The Revenant Wyrd Saga went from a planned three to six.
That story has taken many forms until now, and I am sure if I didn’t declare that it was “done” it could continue to transform.
Along the way, I discovered my passion for research. I absolutely love researching. It would be nothing for me to sit for days on end, barely eating, just getting up to take care of necessities, and research really odd theories and stories. I get my ideas from them to be honest. Of course, my idea’s are never the main theme of the research I am doing, but it always seems to come from some obscure topic mentioned while I am researching. For instance one book I am outlining now is based on something I heard while watching Ancient Aliens.
Unlike most authors, I have not always loved reading and writing. I hated it until I was in 7th grade. My teacher wanted us to read the entire semester. We would read a book and write in a journal about it. Back then the teachers were allowed to spend more time on what their passions were, and actually foster something in their students, and she did just that. She made me love reading and writing. She told me to go to her book shelf and pick out a book that I was interested in. I found one of my first loves: David Eddings’ Pawn of Prophecy.
Back then I was in remedial reading, and my teacher (Mrs. Peters) would sit with me for the time I was in her classroom, taking turns reading the story out loud with me. We would read where the adventure was taking Garion, and then we would flip to the beginning and look at the map so we could follow them as well.
I think it was at that point, getting lost in a book I love to this day, that I knew I had to do this. I had to create the same magic for others that Mr. Eddings created for me.
At times it is boggling. I have three series of books started, and 2 more forming in my mind (and outlined on the computer). At this point I have to step back and finish the ones I have started before I can let myself move forward.
I feel that I am blessed in being able to write, and forging a life of my passion. It is tough at times, but that is what makes the payoff all the sweeter. The writing business is a huge adventure, trying to figure out what to do and what not to do; when to do things and when not to do anything. Currently I am planning the release of the second book to “The Bonds of Blood”. This is the first time I am armed with the knowledge of what I must do for a book release, and I finally understand why it nerves so many authors up, but it is that excitement that makes me love writing. Every time I hear a reader I don’t know praise my work, it makes my heart race and brightens my day.
Travis is the author of The Bonds of Blood, the first book in his epic fantasy series The Revenant Wyrd Saga. He has also written a young adult novel called A Lament of Moonlight which is book one of his pre-apocalypse series The Harbingers of Light. He is currently seeking publication for the first book of a third series, a zombie novel called Desolation. When he isn’t writing he is helping his family and trying to live a normal, under the radar life. His interests lie in cooking, gardening, green living, and human rights advocacy. He is a huge supporter of the Trevor Project and all agencies that seek to preserve natural resources and protect pets from abuse.”

Forty-six.
That’s how many hybrids survived the Hunter attack in the woods after I revived them with an injection of my blood. That’s how many followed me home to Frederick Falls. And that’s how many were now mentally linked to me through a blood bond.

Two days. Three valium. Fourteen hours of sleep.
That’s what it took to realize I wasn’t losing my mind as a result of the noise in my own head.

Sixteen.
That’s how many days have passed since I almost killed Alex. That’s how many days I’ve sat by his bedside, waiting for him to wake up. To ease the guilt, to understand his betrayal, to remember the exact shade of brown in his eyes.

Zero.
That’s my chances of skating by with Gordon Steppe and the Hunter Council. They want me for questioning. I’m afraid what’ll happen if I give them answers.

Can Maya accept that normal is something she will never be because it isn't normal to be
...the Hand of Kali.

EXCERPT

Fear spun Maya around on stricken feet. To defend her back perhaps. She just felt less vulnerable facing her attacker, where she could see his next move. He barreled straight at her. And for all her training in martial arts, she did the one thing her dad always said never to do. She ducked her head and hid her face with her hands. Hands out, as if she could fend off this vicious attacker merely with the soft skin of her palms.
Maya felt the heat before she saw it.
Byron was on fire. A living column of shimmering orange flames. She couldn't breathe. Was afraid to breathe. How did that happen? She glanced around the bathroom as panic filled her veins, her fear taking on a whole new level of hysteria. She had to put the fire out.
She turned to the faucet to fill her hands with water. And froze. In the mirror she saw the burning reflection of Byron disappear. Byron was there one moment and gone the next. Only a few burnt shards of fabric left to say he was ever there. But she remembered the last thing she'd seen before Byron became nothing: brilliant blue eyes turning a frighteningly blood-red.
And Nik, holding the doorknob, staring at the empty space on the floor behind her.

About the author
I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognise that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practise given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each other's loves – it works wonderfully…

My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever remain cross-eyed.

Review- Confesions of an Almost Girlfriend by Louise Rozett

Author- Louise Rozett
Genre- YA
Release Date- 18th of June 2013
Publisher- Harlequin Australia

Review copy provided by publisher.

Blurb- Rose Zarelli has big plans for sophomore year—everything is going to be different. This year, she’s going to be the talented singer with the killer voice, the fabulous girl with the fashionista best friend, the brainiac who refuses to let Jamie Forta jerk her around...

...but if she’s not careful, she’s also going to be the sister who misses the signals, the daughter who can only think about her own pain, the “good girl” who finds herself in mid-scandal again (because no good deed goes unpunished) and possibly worst of all...the almost-girlfriend.

When all else fails, stop looking for love and go find yourself.

4 Sassy Books!

Review- A new year, a new Rose. We continue on from Confessions of an Angry Girl with Rose about to start a new school year. She has her year all planned out, but as everyone knows, things don't always turn out the way we want them to.

Full of teen angst and drama ranging from bullying, friendship dramas, Jamie dramas to self discovery, Confessions of an Almost Girlfriend is one crazy roller-coaster ride of emotion that touches base with serious, real-life issues that all people can relate to.

Rozett has created a book and storyline that is well written, creative, original and  most importantly, relatable to it's readers. The characters are realistic with realistic problems which makes it easy to form an emotional connection to them and while it is directed at a YA audience, I think most young women would enjoy reading it.

It also makes me so thankful that I am no longer a teenager!

Review & Author Interview- Jack Stone- Wild Justice by Vivien Sparx

Title- Jack Stone- Wild Justice
Author- Vivien Sparx
Genre- Suspense/ Thriller/ Erotica
Release Date- 30th of June 2013
Publisher- Self Published

Review copy provided by author.

Blurb- Jack Stone is the Dark Master.
A tough man. A hard man - and he is sexy as all hell.
When Jack Stone arrives in the small town of Windswept, Arizona all he wants is answers. What he finds is a sexy woman with a lust for BDSM and a secret the locals will kill to keep.

3 Sassy Books

Review- Stepping away from the general erotica genre, Vivien has created something quite original with a very intriguing storyline.

Jack Stone, is a man on a mission to find his long lost sister. His research so far has led him to believe that she has possible been trained and sold as a sex slave and his dedication and love for her has made him learn everything about what makes a BDSM master. So with his insight into that world joined with his previous line of work, he has turned himself into one sexy, irresistible bad-ass out for justice.

I love the concept of this story. I love that it's not your typical thriller and not your typical erotica. There is more to the story then just sex. It kind of reminds me of a Bruce Willis movie, Hostage maybe? Awesome fighting scenes, knee-caps being broken, building being set on fire, don't mess with Bruce! Or should I say, don't mess with Jack!!

Now while I loved the storyline I did find it hard to make a connection to some of the characters. Now I have discussed this with Vivien and we found that it is because of her change of writing style for this book. She wanted it to be more "masculine" to both set the scene for Jack and his story and to draw in more male readers which makes total sense. It is also because she wants to keep Jack a mystery and give her readers little bits about him as the book series progress. This is a very smart thing to do. It keeps the readers intrigued and hanging for more.

Author Interview

Bestselling author Vivien Sparx talks about her amazing new hero, Jack Stone in the lead-up to the release of one of the year’s most anticipated books; ‘JACK STONE – WILD JUSTICE’.

Question: I noticed there is another Jack Stone book called ‘Jack Stone – Deadly Revenge’ on the Jack Stone fan page. Any idea when that book will be published?

I am hoping to have ‘Jack Stone – Deadly Revenge’ ready for publication at the end of July. That means about one month in between titles. Ideally I would like to keep that kind of pace going.

Question: Jack Stone seems very different from the other ‘book boyfriends’ being written about over the last few years. Was that a deliberate
decision?

Yes! I deliberately did not want Jack Stone to be another damaged, troubled, dark, emotional, shattered, wrecked, lost….  soul! He doesn’t need fixing. He doesn’t have any real emotional problems. He is a man on a mission, and he’s not haunted by some deep dark emotional secret. He’s a tough guy, but he’s got his ‘shit sorted’. He knows exactly who he is and he doesn’t care if people like him or not. He’s not out to impress, and he’s not out to please anybody. He’s a man on a mission and he’s exactly the opposite of all the other book characters going around at the moment.

Question: You keep referring to Jack’s ‘mission’. Care to explain?

No! It will all become clear when people read ‘Jack Stone – Wild Justice’. This book sets out what Jack Stone is all about. It shows his tough side, his determination, his alpha-male sexy side(!) and a lot of his personality. I think readers will get a sense of who Jack Stone is and what kind of a man he is. In future books, more and more of his background and personality will be revealed.

Question: ‘Jack Stone – Wild Justice’ sets up the series to take place on a very wide landscape – literally all of America. Was that part of the plan?

Yes! I was tired of writing (and reading) about billionaire’s and virgins. There is only so much that can be done with those kind of characters! Jack Stone is totally different! You won’t find Jack wearing a suit, or undressing some naïve virgin in the back of a limousine or on a boardroom table. Jack is a man’s man and the sort of guy who wears jeans and t-shirts. The series is deliberately set in such a way that doesn’t confine the character – that lets him move from location to location and storyline to storyline.

Question: Is Jack Stone a good guy?

Yes. Absolutely. He’s a tough, hard man with an absolute sense of moral justice. If he sees something wrong he will get involved. If he sees something that needs fixing he will step in. Writing the kick-ass action sequences were almost as much fun as writing the sex scenes! Jack will not take a backward step when it comes to conflict. But he’s no fool. Jack is smart, clever, and educated.

Jack Stone- Wild Justice will be available for purchase world wide on the 30th of June 2013.
