Today's author secrets:
– Aimee Easterling’s Author Secret –
If you haven't met me in person, you probably don't know that my most distinctive feature is my perpetually bare feet. My father likes to talk about how I used to run barefoot over gravel as a kid, and although my soles aren't quite so tough anymore, I've still walked along Tasmania's Overland Track, Britain's Pennine Way, and our own Appalachian Trail without shoes on. Just yesterday, I decided it was more fun to walk through a swamp barefoot than to don heavy boots, and my introduction to one of my neighbors came when he tracked my unshod footprints through the woods thinking he'd found a bear...only to stumble across a human instead. Back in college, I was the barefoot girl, although I did toe the line and abide by the rules to be shod in science labs and in the cafeteria. So, if you meet me, don't look at my face. Look down at my feet!

Hmm. I have a lot of them, most of them unintentionally kept. For a while there I couldn’t keep a secret, which infuriated my mother. You see in my family keeping secrets is the norm. We have a lot of secrets. There are things my family thinks are no one else’s business but our own. Which would be fine, but since I live on another continent, they sometimes forget what they have and have not told me.
Divorces, pregnancies, dramatic break-ups my extended family—I don’t always hear about them. Maybe a family member assumes one of the others told me, but most of the time they haven’t. My life is full of little surprises as a result. You get used to it.
My family sounds very dramatic now. I can’t disagree. We would make a great Mexican soap opera.
It took Facebook to teach me to keep my mouth shut about certain things. Once the number of extended family members hit a critical mass combined with the misinterpretation of something I said and that was it. My mother still scolds me about not posting this or that to Facebook.
So what haven’t I broadcasted yet that you might like to know? Well, my name is confusing. This is true for all its permutations, which are numerous for different reasons.
I don’t publish under my legal name. This is so the uber-religious members of my extended family aren’t immediately aware that I now write steamy romance erotica. Although I’m sure they’ll find out eventually. It will be one of their little surprises…
