Between the Layers
by SaraJean Panek
Most fifteen year old girls are trying to figure out who they are; I’m trying to stay alive long enough to figure out what.
I’ve always been on the run. From my guilt about the things I couldn’t change, and from the voice in my head that won’t let me be normal. But yesterday Tommy and I were in a car accident on the way home from school. When I woke up, Tommy was gone, and so was the world I grew up in. Now I’m running less in a metaphorical way, and more in a “pick up the pace if you don’t want to die” way. Why? Because my eyes are blue, and I’m lost in a fantasy world where that means I’m different. It means I might not be human. It means I should already be extinct, and someone called “The Regent” is determined to make me that way.
I need to find the way home, and before I do that, I need to find Tommy. He’s only in this mess because of me. I can’t do it on my own, but it’s hard to know who to trust when everyone keeps trying to kill me.

My Review:
A wonderfully refreshing read!
We meet Sera, a 15yr old girl that hasn't had the easiest life. Walking home from school one afternoon her brothers friend Tommy pulls over to give her a lift. They were heading to see her dad at the cemetery, something she's been dreading. While in the car Sera's invisible friend Reeky pops into her head and gives her a warning. Lightning strikes the road ahead and they plummet into the river. No matter how hard they try they couldn't escape.
Next time Sera wakes up she's in a completely different world and the chaos really begins. She can't find Tommy anywhere.
From the first few pages I was drawn in. I loved that this story is different to what I've been reading, kept me even more intrigued. Panek has created a new world for us to explore, one where magic thrives through it's people, slavery is a major thing, blue eyed people have become extinct and evil rules.
I have to say I loved Sera, she was definitely your average 15yr old girl lol she has a very stubborn streak about her and does complain quite a bit but who could blame her for that really, with everything she goes through I'd probably be the same lol. Another of my faves was Trage, who we meet in the new world. He's just as stubborn as Sera, and he's not affraid to divulge his feelings about matters. I have a feeling we'll be hearing a lot more from him (YAY!!). Another I found interesting was Dorian, he has a very mysterious quality about him and I look forward to seeing where his character goes.
I really enjoyed this story and I look forward to seeing whats installed for us next. I'd recommend this to anyone and everyone looking for something new and compelling to read. :-)
