Review- When Renee asked me to review “A Shade of Vampire”, I thought ok, another girl-meets-vampire-girl-falls-in-live-with-vampire book. I was pleasantly surprised when the story turned out to be a lot more than just that.

We meet Sofia, the main character, as she is walking alone on the beach, upset with her best friend Ben for forgetting her birthday. She is kidnapped by Lucas (a vampire), to be part of a harem for his brother Derek. She is taken to the Blood Shade which is an island sanctuary built by Derek to protect vampires from the Shadow Hunters who want to destroy them all. Derek is Prince of their coven and the most powerful and revered vampire of the Blood Shade. He has just been woken from 400 year sleep spell performed by a witch.

Sofia is such a strong confident character, I really liked her from the start. She shows no fear to Derek and I loved how she protected the other girls in the harem. The very sexy Derek was quite easy to like! His protectiveness towards Sofia against his not-so-nice brother Lucas and his obvious affection for her was beautiful. As their friendship grows and their feelings become stronger towards each other, you are very quickly drawn into their story and cheer them on.

One of my favourite parts of the book was quite early on when Sofia is first introduced to Derek. He has her pinned against the wall and is about to feed on her. Both Sofia and Derek’s sister Vivienne were trying to convince him not to, which wasn’t really working until Sofia says “I know an excuse when I hear one. Don’t you dare deceive yourself into believing that you’re the victim, Derek Novak”.

The description in A Shade of Vampire is really great, you could really picture how it must look and the story behind how it came about is really interesting. This is the first book, so I am hoping in the next book we learn more about that as well as watching Derek and Sofia’s relationship grow. I really enjoyed this book and give it 4/5. ( The prologue let me down , otherwise it would have been 5/5).
