EXCERPT

He pitched away from her, moving toward an open doorway. He shut the door behind him with a barely audible click. She tiptoed toward the door and pressed her ear against it listening. The sound of water hitting tile came to her. A shower. He was going to wash all the blood off. Totally understood how that could be a priority even with a migraine.

She turned and faced the darkened room. Her eyes had begun to adjust to the dimness and she could make out the shape of a king sized bed beneath a large window covered with blackout curtains. Across the room, there appeared to be another doorway. She headed in that direction, found a light switch just outside the door and flipped it on.

The light seemed garish and overly bright after the darkness of the room. Then she realized she was staring into Cain’s walk-in closet.

One way to get to know someone was to look inside their closet. The space was way larger than the amount of clothing in it. Boots and tennis shoes and some dress shoes were lined up in a neat row under a shelf. A few dress shirts hung on hangers, alongside a few pairs of dress pants. But mostly his clothes were stacked in neat bins. One bin held workout pants, one T-shirts, one sweatshirts, one jeans, and others held socks and underwear.

She reached in the bin and nabbed a pair of black boxer briefs. An image floated into her mind of him wearing them. And then another—better—image of him not wearing them. Her heart pumped a stream of longing through her entire body. Now was not the time to be thinking about jumping his bones.

She snagged a pair of sleep pants and a T-Shirt and dashed out of the closet, flipping the light switch behind her. Blackness swallowed everything, blinding her. Ahead of her she heard, the bathroom door open and she could barely make out the shape of him walking into the bedroom. It was too dark to make out any details, but shape was all she needed.

His shoulders were so broad, his waist so trim. Her gaze shifted downward, locking on that place she shouldn’t be looking. She squinted trying to see in the dark. Too bad she didn’t have a pair of those night vision goggles. Damn. Was he wearing a towel?

“Clothes.” She thrust out the pants to him. He took them and then put them on while she tried and tried to see through the dark. He walked over to the bed, drew back the covers, and laid down. He turned his back to her and sighed a breathy sound of pain and sorrow.

That was enough to knock her out of horny-land. She pulled her filthy shirt over her head, and put on the clean T-shirt she still held, then let the sleep pants she’d put on ages ago fall down to her ankles. She needed a shower, but he needed her more—whether he’d admit it or not.

She padded to the other side of the bed and slipped under the covers, facing him.

“No. Don’t.” His tone that of a petulant child—arguing just to argue.

She scooted closer, slipping her arm underneath his neck and pressed herself in to his body. He smelled clean and warm and safe. And even though she was in his bed to offer him comfort, her body eased, relaxing more than she had in years.

His body was rigid with tension—he was two seconds from pulling away. “Shh… Just let me hold you.” She ran her hand through his hair. Felt the dampness of it on her fingers.

As if the balloon of his tension popped, all the hardness in him turned to softness and he melted against her, shifting to find his place of comfort. He nestled his head on her shoulder, his arm around her waist, pulling her tighter in to his body. And it felt so right. So natural to be like this with him—as if they truly were meant for each other.

Part of her knew they were. No one else could ever understand her the way he did. And he needed her to show him he wasn’t a monster, but a beautiful soul who’d survived some bad shit.

Tonight she’d lie here with him, soaking in the sensation of his arms holding her tight, of his warm breath fanning across her chest, of holding him just as tight as he held her, of feeling at home for the first time in her life.

A tear slipped out of her eye and tickled its way down her cheek because tomorrow she would leave.

Excerpts

The Edge of Seventeen (2016)

I am no looker.
I'm not a dog either. But I am no looker.
Aylin used to say I was precocious. "Precocious when it comes to boys," she'd say.
By the time I was done dating Conor, I said I was nothing but a fool.
I started dating too early. Antoni was the first guy I ever saw. I was fourteen, close to fifteen, sporting braces on my teeth. We shared a kiss, nothing passionate, innocent.
Until he touched my breasts and I went cold.
Fourteen. Was he a freaking idiot?
Dawson happened after that. It lasted three months. I was more grown up, more developed. My breasts, especially, were more developed.
I hate my breasts.
But it was Conor who would thrust me into the black world of adulthood with an indignant slap I am certain I will never forget.

~~~
I write because I am lonely.
I write because I hurt.
I write while tears drip from my eyes, turning the screen of my tablet into splotches of pixelated rainbows.
~~~

The way I was brought into this world has nothing to do with how I feel about love.
It has everything to do with how I feel about myself.

~~~
How much horror can a mind endure?
Are the pains of a sixteen-year-old laughed at by those older then her?
What pain did my mother suffer? ("Sometimes I went without food so that I wouldn't have to take that bastard's money, Kez.")
My pain is nothing compared to what hers must have been. And yet, the pain I feel is phenomenal.
Tiago
P.S. I Love You (2007)
Just before the sun rises, when the world is silent and the River Tejo laps gently at the stone steps leading to the giant Praça do Comércio square, leaves of golden sunlight shimmer above the surface of Lisbon's great river. This is my favorite time to sit on these steps, flicking stones into the water, letting my gaze drift west toward the ocean.
And I think of her.
I do not weep anymore. My eyes are dry. I have wept this entire river twice over and still that will not bring her back.
The seagulls taunt me, cawing in accusation. I should have moved faster, they say. I should not have been so complacent with my joy.
I never deserved that joy. I know it.
Tiago
Deadly is the Female (1950)
It is the week for meeting Americans. And if I thought my encounter with Dahlia went bad, then I can only compare my meeting with the one called Kezra to something just short of a nuclear war. It's my fault, mostly. But it's also her fault.
I would love to say that our first encounter is quaint and sweet, that it is the type of first-meeting you expect from a Rom-Com.
It is not.
It is a disaster.
And I am nothing short of a hungover bastard.
But let's call a spade a spade. Guilt must be placed where guilt belongs. And this chick is a real stinker of a piece of work too.
I guess you could say I started it.
I did.
But she contributes gladly to the atomic chain reaction which follows.
Dare I say, I think she even revels in it.
Sexual scenes and strong language included. Not suitable for readers under 18.
EXCERPT:
“What exactly are my powers?” Thea asked
The angel stood up. “Not now. It’s time to go. You have your answers.”
Frustrated, she exhaled loudly. She went to her wardrobe and grabbed a bra, top, and another pair of jeans. The angel turned away, allowing her to dress. She eyed him from behind. So angels were real. And they were handsome and powerful and stern. Nothing like she would have ever imagined them to be. He couldn’t even crack a smile and yet mocked her like a child. Were all angels like that? Maybe he didn’t like humans.
“At least tell me why they sent you,” she said, smoothing down her top. “Why you?”
“Why not me?” he said, almost in a growl. “Who would you prefer?”
“I don’t know,” Thea said, lifting her shoulders. “Someone able to smile once in a while?”
He turned to face her, his plain expression flavored with annoyance. “I’m not here to entertain you. You need someone to train you and help you learn how to control your abilities. I’m the best there is. You should be honored.”
Thea shook her head, annoyed. Trained? Like a puppy? Not happening. Especially not by this man, who’d been abrupt with her from the start, despite his careful treatment of her wounds. “I should be honored? Honored that I was attacked by those creatures? Honored that I almost got ripped apart? Honored that you had to come and save me, a poor damsel in distress?”
His face hardened with each word she said, but she couldn’t give a fuck.
“I don’t need to be saved by a warrior who can’t stop the horrors happening in this city every day. Or by a God that keeps himself hidden from those he’s supposed to inspire? People are raped and drugged and killed every day; where are you then? Where is He then? I’ve gotten this far without the help of you or God, and I’ll be fine to continue without you.”
The angel’s stance didn’t change. The only indication of his agitation was in the grounding of his jaw. “You’re being irrational. If I was able to find you here, the demons will find you here. You cannot escape them. Pack. Now.”
“No.” She grabbed her phone. “You go. Thanks very much, but I’ll be fine.”
With a low grunt of frustration, the angel grabbed her around the waist quicker than she would have thought possible. He flew up to the ceiling, his rock-like arm digging into her stomach, pressing her against his chest. He swept his free hand over the length of the room. The room began to glow and then burst into flames, smoke eating up the remaining air.
“No!” She struggled to get out of his arms while her home and everything she owned burned.
He leapt out of the window, holding onto her as he flew over the city.
