Review- Rave Girl by David Jerome

Title- Rave Girl
Author- David Jerome
Publish Date- 20th of June 2012

Blurb- A young girl named Maya is forced to survive on her own, when her runaway mother dies of a drug overdose. Battling inner demons, she tries to find belonging in the adult world of nightclubs and raves. This lifestyle gets her tangled with heartless drug dealers that seek her life. Maya must now brawl to stay alive, while trying to find somewhere to belong...and someone to love her.

Review- Finally someone dares to shed some inside light on the real issues that people on drugs face every day, how they get there and how it affects the people that surround them. To be honest, when I first started reading Rave Girl I had no idea what to make of it. I have never read anything like it. This is a good thing.

15 year old Maya, physically and emotionally damaged throughout her growing up, left with nothing when her Mother dies of a drug overdose. With only one place to go she loses herself in partying and drugs. On a night out she stumbles upon Trey, a recreational drug user with a rough up-bringing himself, who introduces her to coke and all that comes with it. Little did they know about how dependent on it she would become. Battles with drug lords, suicidal tendencies, bring Maya and Trey dependent of each other instead of the drug. But with everything that happened during their wild nights it has caught up to them and now they run for their lives.

David Jerome produced such raw material in Rave Girl. The relationships are intense, the action is thrilling and the story has this realness about it which makes the story believable. It's short, not so sweet and straight to the point.

Don't know what to read next? Seriously consider giving Rave Girl a go. My expectations weren't high but let me tell you I am glad I read it. Not only did David create and deliver an amazing storyline, it also opened my eyes to the fact that thousands of people that have drug addictions and go through this type of thing every day and society barely ever hears about it.

I did find a message in it.

Everybody deserves to be loved.
Even if you don't think you do.

Make sure you add Rave Girl to your TBR pile.

Review- Seduce by Felicity E Heaton

Title- Seduce
Author- Felicity Heaton
Genre- Paranormal Romance (18+)
Publish Date- 23rd of June 2012
Publisher- Dark Rose Publishing

Blurb- Bloodlust runs in his veins, a dark master waiting for the day it will reign over him. Now a woman with a pure soul and wicked intentions has him in her sights and is determined to crack the ice around his heart, and she might save or damn him.

Antoine stands apart from the world around him, a dangerous and broken soul who must maintain rigid control at all times or risk his dark addiction finally seizing hold of him. The shadows of his past haunt him and he sees his bleak future each night when his brother wakes screaming, his blood addiction turning him savage. He cannot allow himself to feel, but when Sera walks into Vampirerotique, the erotic theatre he runs with three other vampires, to audition, she awakens dangerous desires in him—hungers that could spell the end of both of them.

Sera has wanted Antoine since the night she first saw the gorgeous aristocrat vampire. She can’t ignore the deep carnal hunger he stirs in her or the ache to know the heat of his touch. With the help of her sire, an ex-performer at Vampirerotique, she sets in motion a game of seduction, one designed to thaw the ice in Antoine’s veins and make him burn for her.

When Sera discovers the shocking truth about his past and the darkness that lurks within him, will she be strong enough to seize his heart with both hands and win him forever or will she lose him to the ghosts that still haunt him?

Review- Well tie me to the bed and call me Sera!! (Wait, did I just say that out loud???)

What an amazingly hot, steamy, intense, erotic, lustful read!  Within the first few pages I was completely captured, wanting everything Sera wanted- to find out more about the dark and eluding Antoine. One would think that owning and running a vampire erotica theatre one would be a very sexually active being. Not so much for Antoine. Battling inner demons that could potentially put anyone around him at risk, he has shut the door to his humanity and thrown away the key. Sera is determined to break down his walls, even if that means becoming a performer in his live orgy shows.. Whatever it takes to be close to him.

Felicity Heaton takes us on an rollercoaster journey with her well thought out storyline and emotion fuelled sex that will "Seduce" you. Heaton had me wanting more and more, hanging on every word she wrote.

If it doesn't heat you to the depths of your core then there is something seriously wrong with you. The finger biting intensity of Sera and Antoine's chemistry is just HOT HOT HOT!

Now I haven't read the first two in the Vampire Erotic Theatre Romance Series, but after reading this I will definitely going back and reading them! I WANT MORE! I am relieved to announce that there will be a 4th one. Enslave.

So do yourself a favour and and get this book. Heck get the whole series! You will thank me later!

Head to Amazon to purchase your copy of SEDUCE. You will also find COVET (book 1) and CRAVE (book 2) there.

Review- Forbidden Mind by Kimberly Kinrade

Title- Forbidden Mind
Author- Kimberly Kinrade
Genre- YA Paranormal
Publish Date- 6th of September 2011
Publisher- Evolved Publishing

Blurb- She reads minds.
He controls minds.
Together, they might get out alive.

Sam thinks she's months away from freedom. After spending her life in a secret school, rented out to the rich and powerful as a paranormal spy, she is ready to head to college like any normal eighteen-year-old.

Only Sam isn't normal. She reads minds. And just before her big going-away party, she links to the mind of a young man who changes everything.

Drake wasn't raised as a 'Rent-A-Kid.' He was kidnapped and taken there by force. But his exceptional physical strength and powers of mind control make him very dangerous, especially to Sam.

When they meet, Sam is forced to face the truth of her situation, and to acknowledge that not all is as it seems in her picture-perfect world. For what awaits her on her eighteenth birthday isn't a trip to college, but an unexpected nightmare from which she may not be able to escape.

To survive, they must work together.

But will their powers be enough to save them before it's too late?

Review- When I first started reading it I thought "this sounds an awful lot like X-Men with a twist". And you know what, it is, but I really enjoyed it! From the first page Forbidden Mind is full of twists and turns, I could never guess what was going to happen next. There were so many unexpected incidents in it that I never saw coming. At every page turn I was wanting more. You should all know by now that I absolutely detest boring bits, so I'm glad to say that you won't find any in Forbidden Mind. It has everything you want in a good book, drama, action, mystery, romance and that evil bad guy that everyone hates.

I love the way Kimberly created Sam and Drakes' relationship. For the most part of the book they never see each other. Only through linking Sams' mind with Drakes' did they communicate.  Making their bond through only talking to each other with the mind was really creative. I guess it touched base with the subject of looks don't matter. I like a hidden secret message. Whether Kimberly planned it or not, it definitely delivered a message to me.

The blurb really does sum up everything within the book so the only thing I can tell you is it is definitely worth reading. It's a great little story to escape to and will keep you thoroughly entertained. I will definitely be making time to read the next one. It was a refreshing change from the regular paranormal I read.

The greatest part is Forbidden Mind and it's sequel Forbidden Fire are on sale on Amazon in eBook form NOW for only 99c!!! So now you have no excuse to not read it.

Review/ Author Interview- Darkest Embrace by Robyn M Pierce

Title- Darkest Embrace
Author- Robyn M Pierce
Genre- Paranormal Romance
Publish Date- 27th January 2012

Blurb- While running away to escape the actions of her deceased father, Elyssa Smith is caught in the worst storm that Lanistter Isle has ever seen, forcing her to seek shelter in the only place nearby -- Lanistter Castle. Soon, however, it's made clear that the inhabitants of the castle are the ones she's running away from in the first place.

Zeke Lanistter is the head of the European Lanistter branch -- and a sadist through and through. He has bloody plans for Elyssa, and will stop at nothing to get rid of her.

Reid Lanistter is known by many for his womanizing. But when Elyssa enters the castle, he does all he can to protect her from Zeke, unexpectedly morphing into a one-woman man.

In a sinister turn of events, Reid becomes the danger to Elyssa's life, and it’s Zeke who finds himself doing whatever he can to protect Elyssa...

Review- What a perfect little escape! Mystery, action and a love triangle- what more could you want? When strong-willed Elyssa is forced to stay within the confines of the Lanistter Castle at the hands of one Reid Lanistter she never thought she would fall for her captor nor he for his prisoner. Their new found relationship isn't without drama though. Elyssa is in danger of becoming the next victim of Zeke's (Reid's brother) sick and twisted desires. The battle to keep her safe is intriguing and intense. But when a soul comes back to haunt the Lanistter Castle, Elyssa is left not knowing who to trust. Reid, her lover, who even though she loves with all of her heart, isn't quite right or Zeke, who has a disturbed lifestyle but can't seem to shake the fact that has some sort of feelings for Elyssa

Robyn M Reid delivers an intense love story (or should I say love triangle?) that will have you captured from the very first page. Her writing style makes the story flow smoothly with no confusion in the storyline. Her writing shows that she put in a lot of time preparing the story and its characters before putting pen to paper.

Lanistter Castle is a place I would definitely run away to again. And with Book 2 in the works I won't have to wait long. Destructive Embrace is expected to be released in late October 2012.

Some Info on Robyn!

Robyn Pierce is an up-and-coming writer from Las Vegas, where the night is never-ending. She dabbles in PhotoShop, photography, modeling, and enjoys editing the work of others. She is currently working on a book series and can't wait for the world to read the stories.

Robyn had some spare time to answer some questions. Here they are.

Q1- So congratulations on your first novel Darkest Embrace. What inspired you to start writing?
Well, I was fifteen and in Geometry class. The teacher tended to go off into these little tangents (hah! Math-appropriate language!) about his past loves, so I usually spent most of class reading the novel my friend was working on. Eventually, he and I began collaborating on a few stories and, while those didn’t go anywhere, the love of writing stuck with me. A million roleplays and one very supportive English teacher later, and I had the idea for a 3-book series telling all of the stories of the Lanistter family. Now that number has grown, but I think that just emphasizes my love for what I’ve started. :]

Q2- Who is your favourite author?
This one is easy, at least! Richelle Mead. While I was reading her Vampire Academy series, I just felt this intense connection to all of her characters, and that inspired me to try to make the kind of relatable characters that I love to read about.

Q3- And your favourite book?

This one isn’t so easy! I don’t think I have one specific book that I would read over and over again. It’s more like… There are so many books that I would just love to read over and over again until I die, starting with the whole Vampire Academy series, and tossing in Meg Cabot’s Mediator series as an honorable mention.

Q4- Is the paranormal something that has always interested you?

Yes, I have always had a love for all things paranormal. I grew up watching Charmed with my mom and my grandma, along with anything spooky or just plain out of the ordinary, although the creepy things I was forced to watch alone. Ghost stories, vampires, werewolves, demons, angels, mediators… I love them all.

Q5- I love that the entire book was based in the one location yet you still managed to keep it flowing and interesting. Was that hard to do?
No. This one was easy. I’ve been working on The Lanistter Chronicles for such a long time, and with this being the first book in the series, the European Lanistter castle is someplace that I know inside and out. There is always somewhere inside it that I could bring them to if any of the ‘usual’ spots start to feel boring. We’ll learn more about them in Destructive Embrace.

Q6- The characters in the book all have their own unique mental issues. Was that difficult to write?
Not at all. I like to think we’re all a little bit insane inside, whether we’ll admit it or not. Occasionally it took me a few minutes of frustrated mumbling under my breath and pulling at my own hair in order to channel certain moods, but for the most part, it was easy to just find a bit of humanity in them all. Just enough to drive them – and those around them ;D – a little crazy.

Q7- Elyssa is a very strong willed and determined young woman. Is there a little of yourself in her?

I would like to say there isn’t, and that I’m not a full of myself just enough to put some of me in her, but even now, as I read back through DE or write new things involving Elyssa, I sometimes roll my eyes and just mutter, “Yea, that’s so you.” Because somehow a lot of me wound up in there. And yet I don’t think I would have the nerve to deal with what she did!

Q8- Book 2 Destructive Embrace is due out later this year, can we expect a book 3?
Yes, Destructive Embrace is due out later on, no later than the end of October if everything goes according to schedule. And yes, I hope you can look forward to a third book. However, it won’t be with the characters you’re used to by then. Book three will involve the American branch of the Lanistter clan, and I hope everyone loves them just as much as they seem to love the crazies on Lanistter Isle.

Q9- Now a couple of random questions. Reid or Zeke?

Nooooo! -falls over in despair- The question I have dreaded since I first realized there was something there! I love them both to death. There is just something about each of them that always has me running back to each of them. Reid is just so much fun, and ever the pervert, so he’s nice to spend time with. But Zeke’s intensity… There’s just something about him that I’ve kind of been in love with since the moment he first existed. [I know: bad Robyn! Falling for your own creation!] I don’t think I could ever fully choose between the two, but I always somewhat lean more toward Zeke than Reid. [Meanwhile, Reid pouts in the corner like the lovely little brat he is…]

Q10- What is your favourite animal?
Oh, yay! Back to the easy questions! -wipes sweat from brow- I love cats. I have two of my own, and a couple of darling little demons they are! They’re my little babies, haha, and I love them.

Q11- Favourite smell?
Coconuts. Hands down. Shampoo, conditioner, lotion, everything coconutty, I love. A close second would be the plumeria scent that Bath & Body Works has…

Q12- A question from my sister Emma- What is your favourite romance movie?
Hmmm. Good question. I’m not sure I know, to be entirely sure. I love The Notebook, Sweet Home Alabama, recently watched Pride & Prejudice and loved it… Hmm. I don’t think I have a favorite, though. No wait, I know! -snaps fingers- It has to be Nightmare Before Christmas! …Not a romance? Pish! Jack & Sally are my favorite together, that’s romance enough for me! :]

Thanks Robyn for taking the time to answer my questions. I look foward to Destructive Embrace.

ALLIANCE FORGED blog tour: Guest post w/ Kylie Griffin & Giveaway

Today we have author Kylie Griffin on our blog, as we are the next stop on her blog tour for ALLIANCE FORGED. We have a special post and giveaway, so check it out...

A Writer’s Inspiration…

As a teen I was selected by Rotary to attend a youth leadership camp. It was a wonderful experience meeting up with other young people from around the state and participating in various workshops and activities.

One of the most memorable was a trust building activity that involved partnering up and adopting a physical disability for half a day. I ended up being blindfolded to simulate losing one’s sight, and, if you’ll excuse the pun, it was an eye-opening experience.

Not only did it teach you the obvious – how much you take sight for granted – it made me realize just how important it was to utilize my four remaining senses and other skills. Pinpointing sounds, scenting the air, the sensation of heat or cold on your skin, feeling with all parts of your body not just your hands and finding ways or implementing strategies to keep yourself safe.

I learned to think outside the box, particularly to solve issues or problems. And this lesson has stayed with me to this day, so much so that I incorporated the 25 year old experience into one of my books.

The heroine in ALLIANCE FORGED, Book #2 in my fantasy romance series, is a priestess, but I also decided that rather than make Kymora blind from birth, a childhood illness would take away her sight. And, because this is a paranormal romance book, to compensate for her loss of sight, she would develop the ability to decipher people’s feelings through listening to their voices and sensing their emotions in their auras.

The whole idea of a character who was once able to see then has to deal with the devastating loss of a vital sense and struggle to use such a powerful ability would be more interesting, not to mention a challenge for me as a writer.

What sort of impact would this disability have on Kymora as she grew up? How would she adapt? What skills would she develop to compensate? With her newfound ability would she learn to use it responsibly or abuse it? How would being blind affect her life choices or career? How would people perceive or treat her because of her disability?

Just to complicate things, I decided to make her not just a priestess but the spiritual leader of her religious order. A woman with the ability to read people’s emotions through their auras would be well suited to a life of helping others, but what trials and experiences would she have to go through to achieve this? Would those around her believe she was capable of fulfilling this role? Could she? Would people accept her being in such a responsible position despite her disability?

The more I thought about these questions and the discoveries I made as a teen during the experience at that leadership camp, I knew how easy it was for people to formulate misconceptions, or hold certain opinions of you and make assumptions on what you could or couldn’t do because of your disability. It’s human nature to think that a disability is a liability, and the person so ‘afflicted’ needs to be coddled, excused, dismissed or seen as different or lacking something.

And to make the storyline even more interesting, in the book the Na’Chi, a race of half human-half demon people, believe physical perfection is a desirable quality. Varian, the leader of this group, has facial scars received in a battle with a demon, and his plot thread mirrors and complimented Kymora’s…but that’s another story.

In ALLIANCE FORGED, Kymora faces all these issues and, as a writer, I was glad I didn’t play it safe and write about a more conventional character. It would never have been as much fun or as exciting a challenge to portray.

So, what are your thoughts on reading a story about a character with a disability? Does it intrigue you? Have you read romances with this sort of story line? Or do you prefer a character who faces other sorts of challenges?

ALLIANCE FORGED

Book #2 of the Light Blade series

(release date - July 3rd 2012 from Berkley)

There is no mercy in the demon realm. No escape. In this place of desperation and conflict, anyone who is not purebred is virtually powerless. Until a blind priestess lays claim to a half-breed warrior, body and soul…

Hunted and marked for death by Na’Reish demons for their half-blood heritage, the Na’Chi are searching for a new home—something an alliance offered by the human leader could provide. With both races divided by prejudice, when Light Blade rebels brutally attack the Na’Chi, the alliance seems doomed to fail.

Varian, leader of the Na’Chi, a hybrid race of gifted warriors, is cursed with the darker impulses of his demon heritage. Controlling the part of himself that craves the high of the battle is a struggle he’s afraid he’ll lose—until he meets Kymora Tayn, a priestess driven to serve her deity. While he’s unwilling to trust anyone outside his people, he finds himself drawn to Kymora’s strength and passionate nature, and discovers she has the power to calm the darkness inside him.

When the Na’Reish raid human territory for blood-slaves and kickstart a war, the key to the survival of both races—Na’Chi and human— is an alliance. However, when Kymora is kidnapped, pitting human against human, Varian realizes he must embrace his darker half, not only to save the alliance…but also the woman he loves.

Kylie Griffin Bio

Kylie Griffin’s obsession with all things paranormal/fantasy started at an early age, when she used to imagine the jacaranda tree in her front yard was a spaceship used to defend the world from invading enemies. Writing stories seemed a natural extension to her childhood adventures.

Today, she’s a primary school teacher sharing her love for the written word with young children. In her spare time, she writes and reads all things paranormal.

Kylie lives in a small rural village in outback New South Wales, Australia, where she volunteers in a number of emergency service organizations in her local community. Visit her website at www.kyliegriffin.com

Guest post by YA paranormal author Ella James

Never too old for YA books...

Before I started writing ebooks and was writing with the goal of getting an agent and a "brick and mortar" book deal, I always imagined my potential readers as high schoolers. They would buy my books and pass them around school, as in those best-case scenarios where a book becomes an international sensation and people start naming their children after its characters. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit I spent a good deal of time trying to stay up on teenage slang. I was thrilled to learn the term 'Facebook official' and tried to make myself - or at least my characters - say 'sick' instead of 'cool.'

Sometime last summer, I started hearing a lot about Amazon's Kindle and the BN Nook, and sometime after that I decided maybe I would put some of my books out there in eland. I got a Facebook account. Put myself on Goodreads. By some miracle, people started friending me. Fan mail came eventually, and in my shock that anyone was reading and loving my books, there was another shock: almost none of these people were teenagers. In fact, according to the data on my blog and my Facebook page, my average reader is about my age - maybe a little older: somewhere in their late 20s or early 30s. Most of the readers who track me down to say they liked my books read Twilight as adults - if they read it.

I was originally going to write my guest post about Sex, Drugs, & Rock N' Roll in YA books. After I realized that's probably been done to death, I thought of another problem: How much vulgarity is acceptable depends a lot on the age of the reader. If almost all of my readers are adults, how does that affect the way I write YA? What does it mean for me that I now know I'm writing for adults at least equally as much as I'm writing for teenagers?

This has been my experience: On the sex front, adult romance readers delving into YA romance want a little somethin' somethin'. They don't seem to want much, because they're mature enough to understand that teens are also reading YA books and they want to shelter the teens, but they do want something. Teens, on the other hand, seem a little more likely to be satisfied by a good kiss or a romantic confession of neverending love - a la Twilight. When it comes to drugs, it's the exact opposite. In my YA paranormal romance, HERE, the main characters go to a party in a Denver suburb where some of their friends are rolling (that's doing E, or Ecstasy) and other friends are drinking. More than one high-school-aged reader has said they thought this scene was spot on - "just like a real party," one of them told me, "but more people would be doing (prescription) pills." Part of me feels like I'm skirting real issues by not writing more about "pills" and having studious Milo "vyvansing" (using Adderall-like uppers to study). It may not be a desirable reality, but it is a reality - a lot of high schoolers use recreational drugs. But since adults don't like reading about it and there's a widespread mentality that we're supposed to shelter teens by ignoring the issues in fiction or only writing about them in such a way where the character suffers in a big way as a consequence, I haven't pushed the envelope with this (yet?). I included the peripheral characters "rolling" in HERE only because I cannot imagine a large, unchaperoned high school party where no one is doing drugs. Call me crazy...

Yet another interesting facet of the sex, drugs & rock 'n roll debate is this: The average teenager reading on a Nook, Kindle, or Ipad can likely make independent choices about which books to buy. I know that since there are so many adults reading YA ebooks, they sometimes screen the books first, but I also would imagine that parents might be less likely to pre-read their children's books because unlike at a bookstore, the purchasing of the book is not as 'obvious' or as formal an occasion. (I can buy a book on my couch and my husband might never notice me doing it.) Not having or being a teenager, though, this is something I don't know a lot about.

What I do know is my own standards: nonspecific hanky panky in a book marketed for teens, even if the majority of the readers end up being adults. By nonspecific I mean the Cayne and Julia scenes in the Amtrak. You know they're doing something, but I tried to make it almost impossible to discern whether they were simply kissing or doing a whole lot more. (If you read Stained, what was your impression?) As for drugs: I'll probably continue to mention them in YA books even if it makes some adults unhappy (as it did when a woman reviewing HERE said it turned her off the book).

And, because it's true: we are never too old for YA books, I'm changing my stories in other ways, too... Making sure each character has a really solid history. Making sure it's abundantly clear exactly why the characters like each other romantically - usually because some need is being satisfied. And making sure the plot can hold  up under the scrutiny of someone who's been reading fiction for 25 years rather than 10.

Do you read YA romance? What do you think about the inclusion of sex and drugs? I think we can all agree on the merits of rock n' roll.

**COVER REVEAL**

Cover Reveal for book #4 in the Hush,Hush series...

I'll have to admit out of the four covers THIS one is my favorite. I know, it's not as dramatic as the others but I think that's what I love about it..."The calm before the storm" (Calm as in the cover, storm as in what lies inside) as they say lol. It's so sad that this will be the last book in the series, but I seriously can't wait to get my hands on it. ;)
